Creative Arts Therapies for Mental Health
May 3rd, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
This presentation will cover the various creative arts modalities used in mental health settings such as Dance, Drama, Music, and Art.
Please note: Participants/viewers should have paper and drawing materials available.
Presenters:Maria Ninos, MA, BC-DMT, GL-CMA, Melissa Trochez, MA, LMF, ATR, Hope Carter, MA, ATR-BC, LCPC, Jessica Brizuela, MA, MT-BC, Ryan Lisman, MA, APCC, P-RDT.
- Maria Ninos is a dance movement therapist who is passionate about using movement and dance to assist in healing the body, mind, and spirit.
- Melissa Trochez is a Los Angeles based fine artist and licensed art therapist who utilizes art to assist others with healing and growth.
- Hope Carter has been an Art Therapist and Clinical Counselor for over 20 years. Her passion is working with trauma, eating disorders, addiction, and child/adoption issues.
- Jessica Brizuela is a music therapist and certified neurologic music therapist. She uses a humanistic and improvisational approach to better serve the patients she works with.
- Ryan Lisman is a drama therapist and uses drama and theatre processes to achieve therapeutic goals. He uses a strength-based humanistic drama therapy model to build empathy skills to the patients he serves.

Tai Chi Chuan (In-Person Only)

Tai Chi Chuan is a Chinese Martial Art practiced for both its defense training and health benefits.
Presenter: Higinio De La Rosa
Higinio has been practicing Yang Style Tai Chi for 22 years with various Masters.
**This event will only be conducted in-person only at the south lawn adjacent to the Della Martin Center. The maximum occupancy is 10. Participants must adhere to COVID-19 guidelines by wearing a face covering and social distancing.

Healing from the Effects of Stress and Trauma: a Holistic Health Approach

Discussion of stress and trauma effects and resources to mitigate these effects including acupressure, herb/food recommendations, and mindfulness exercise.

Smadar Garritson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Lactation Educator for the Huntington Hospital Maternal Wellness Program in Pasadena, California. Smadar has earned a master’s degree in medical Anthropology from University College London and a master’s in clinical social work from New York University. She blends traditional psychoanalysis with solution focused therapy. Smadar is a strong supporter and advocate for the Maternal Mental Health community.

Depression in Children and the Pandemic

Dr Kurkjian graduated from the University of San Diego, majored in Psychology, and double minored in Biology and Chemistry. Dr. Kurkjian obtained his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Kurkjian completed his Adult Psychiatric Residency training at the UCLA. He is double board certified in Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
This presentation will address the impact the pandemic had on the mental health of teens.

Nature Therapy and the Benefits of Horticulture on Mental Health

In this presentation we will learn the benefits of actively and passively spending time in nature, and the positive impact that it has on mental health outcomes. We will also discuss horticultural and mindfulness-based therapy techniques that help reduce anxiety and stress.

David Washington is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the IOP/PHP programs at Huntington Hospital. David specializes in working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and addiction issues. He currently has a private practice where he works with children, adolescents, and adults using nature and horticultural therapy techniques.
