Understanding and Navigating Medicare

If you’re 65 or older, make sure you have access to Huntington’s local, world-class care by enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan from October 15 to December 7 (the annual enrollment period for Medicare beneficiaries).

Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are an “all in one” alternative to original Medicare. If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan to cover the gaps left by original Medicare, you still have Medicare coverage; management of your benefits is simply reassigned from the federal government to a Medicare-approved private health insurance company. These “bundled” plans include each requirement of Medicare coverage: Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), and usually Part D (drug coverage).

Medicare Advantage is a type of health insurance plan structured similar to a managed-care plan or HMO. MA plans are network-based within a specific service area, and require the oversight of a primary care doctor, which you select, to manage and coordinate your care.

In addition to having access to Huntington’s high-quality care at low cost, MA plans offer beneficiaries a great value with many extra benefits, which include:

  • Built-in prescription drug coverage
  • Annual out-of-pocket spending limit
  • Annual physical and screenings
  • Stipends for common over-the-counter items
  • Transportation
  • Gym memberships
  • At-home visits
  • Many more added benefits!
